DDXLK - the history

Dansk DX Lytter Klub (DDXLK) - Danish DX Listeners' Club - is an independent organisation of Danish short wave-, medium wave and FM DX'ers as well as other radio enthusiasts and dedicated radio listeners.

The club was founded on February 3rd 1973 as a local club near Rødkærsbro in Central Jutland. At that time it was called "Midtjysk DX Lytter Klub". The club was founded by DX'ers Henning Kristensen and Stig Hartvig Nielsen, and was initiated as an alternative and supplement to the two Danish DX clubs at that time: “Cimbrer DX Club” and “Danish Shortwave Club International” - both of which were publishing their magazines in English.

In September 1974, the name of Midtjysk DX Lytter Klub was changed into the current name: Dansk DX Lytter Klub (Danish DX Listeners' Club) since many new members who joined the club were living outside the local area of Central Jutland.

From the very beginning, the publication of DDXLK called "DX-FOKUS" was published on a weekly basis. This was later changed to bi-weekly and eventually to monthly. Now DX-FOKUS is published bimonthly.

The magazine was and still is written solely in Danish - by Danes - for Danes - reflecting what can be heard in Denmark.

Unlike other magazines, DX-FOKUS was and still is a magazine for people who take a general interest in mainly foreign radio stations and even local broadcasting in Denmark and not solely a magazine for hard core DX'ers.

DX-FOKUS still going strong

DX-FOKUS features many articles (a.o. on visits to foreign radio stations), a DX news section, a log section (over the past few years it has included more and more FM logs), news from the independent local radio stations in Denmark, news on FM stations particularly from Northern Europe, news on satellite stations etc.

The biggest Danish DX Club

In the course of 1976, DDXLK became the biggest Danish DX club with more members in Denmark than the "competing" club, DSWCI.

It was proved that Denmark needed a Danish speaking DX club.

DDXLK's current membership stands at approximately 75 members and 25 subscribers to DX-FOKUS, a total of some 100. The subscribers include libraries, companies, radio stations and foreign DX'ers. Thereby, DDXLK remains by far the biggest club for Danish DX'ers.

What else do we doDDXLK DX-camps can also be a lot of fun. This is Bjarke Vestesen (left) and Peter Witten at a DX-camp near the west coast of Jutland.

Publishing DX-FOKUS is obviously the main activity for DDXLK.

But, over the years, DDXLK has also arranged a number of meetings and DX camps in various parts of Denmark; in recent years primarily concentrating on FM-DX'ing as well as short wave and medium wave DXing.

For some time, DX programmes in Danish were produced and aired via the radio station HCJB in Quito, Ecuador and Polish Radio in Warsaw.

Previously, visits were arranged to various parts of Europe including Italy, Poland, Sweden and the UK.

From time to time we have produced some special publications. DDXLK was the first club to publish a complete listing of all European FM stations called The European FM Handbook. During a number of years, the DDXLK Hobby Pirate List was the list for listeners to the Sunday morning stations on 48 metres. More recently we have issued some publications with details on FM and TV stations in various countries of Europe.

When the new local community stations were allowed to take to the air in Denmark in 1983, DDXLK began publishing regularly listings of these stations. The booklet was called “Danske Lokalradioer” and was the only source of reliable information on these new stations. The list was edited by Stig Hartvig Nielsen, and gradually it turned into a quite large "thing" for a small club like DDXLK. The list was generating quite a lot of income for the club, and for many years the club was living on the money made from this publication.

However, in 1990 it was decided that it was not possible to produce such a publication on a volunteer basis any longer, and so Stig Hartvig Nielsen founded his own company, Hartvig Media ApS, and continued the publication of the booklet under the new name “Radio TV Håndbogen”.

In 1995, Bjarke Vestensen and Stig Hartvig Nielsen representing the DDXLK arranged the EDXC Conference in cooperation with the DSWCI. The conference took place in Rebild in Northern Jutland. In most respects this was one of the most succesfull EDXC conferences ever held. The agenda was impressive and there were many participants from all over the world. For this special occasion, a short wave radio station (operating with low power on two frequencies) went on the air in conjunction with the conference.

In 1999, the DDXLK - again with Bjarke Vestesen and Stig Hartvig Nielsen - arranged the Nordic Championship in DXing, "NorDX '99".
